1. What programs did you apply to? All university? All community? Both? Where are the programs - east cost, west cost, midwest, south? It makes a differece. Because if you applied to 70 university programs only on the east and west costs, that was the best way of applying widely.
2. Any other red flags? What was your surgery grade? Did you do any aways? What about your Sub-I grade?
3. How well did you know your letter writers? How many letters and from whom? You say they're great, but are they from big name surgeons? Community surgeons? Family medicine residents?
4. Why are you asking this now? Why didn't you talk with him before the process started? (Or did you, sorry if I missed that) What did you do before the season to prepare and optimize your interview season?
5. Have you applied to any prelims? Does your home program have any pre-lim spots and what is their track record for getting into categorical residency?
There are probably more interviews to trickle in, but please sit down with your home PD now and talk about this. If your surgeon letter writers are willing to go to bat for you, talk with them about the situation, too. You could also talk to current residents to get their ideas; and if you know any recent grads who are currently residents somewhere that you applied, give them a call. Some programs will look extra hard at an applicant one of their own current residents in good standing stands up for. You can also try to talk with any med ed advisors in the department; I don't know about your school, but my med school had a fantastic surgical education coordinator (non-MD) who went to all sorts of surg ed fairs and knew many PDS and who was a godsend during the process.
Feel free to PM me if you have any specific questions or if I can help further; am a current GS intern, so know what the process is like a bit.
