I remember when I was applying there was an applicant (can't remember where from) that went to the social the night before and got black out drunk. And I mean falling all over the place. Next morning he shows up 3 hours late to the interview. We were all like bro you should've just turned around and went home. Needless to say he did not match at that program. So yea don't do that.
But honestly, in my experience, the social isn't really that important in terms of your chances of matching. It's a great opportunity to find out more about the program, and more importantly, whether you see yourself getting along with the current residents. But I know at least 4 people who matched at different programs last year without attending the social for one reason or another. So just go if you can, have a few drinks, enjoy the free food, and see if you think these people are ones you wouldn't mind spending 16 hours a day with.
