So I'm an IM intern at a university program in CA that has in-house fellowships for GI and pulm. Currently, I can't make up my mind between the two. I just spoke to a GI fellow today, and he advised me to do research in GI immediately. He then stated if I decide to go into pulm/crit, having research in another field is fine. However, if I chose to go into GI, but have research in pulm/crit with NO research in GI, it would be very very difficult to get into a GI fellowship. I do see what he is saying. But I wanted to see what your opinions were on this topic.
My exact question is: Will it hurt my chances at going into Pulm/Crit if I do research in GI right now? Or vice versa?
