Psychiatry Residency Applicants Doubled?

samedi 10 octobre 2015

Feel free to skip this background. I've put questions at the end.

My friend has told me that Psych is getting more competitive these days and that the number of U.S. Grad applicants has doubled. I'm going to shamelessly admit I'm not drawn to psych at the moment because the pay is on the lower end and the respect in the field just seems to be lacking. Despite all that, I respect and truly believe mental health is a huge issue and sitting and talking with people about their emotional issues would never get tedious for me. I read in my coursepack that nearly half of the Schizos end up committing suicide for example. As for personality. I'm as patient as they come and people seem to really like talking to me because I'm chill even though I'm in my head most of the time and mainly introverted.

If I were to consider psych, my main concerns would be...where is it going in the next couple of years. Like, ADHD still doesn't have affordable biological tests (I heard Harvard has a neuroimagine test that will detect and specific pharmaceutical agents necessary but it's $$$$) and that's one of my main interests. I'd love to be an advocate/spokesperson for mental health in the future, but I don't know if I wanna dedicate myself to psych because at the end of the day, if it's not respected and if all I'm gonna be doing is being a futile advocate, I don't wanna go down that road. One of my main goals in picking a profession is looking for a field that I'd be able to make a tangible difference in in the short term. Things like Cardiology or Orthopedics interest me because you're literally saving lives or getting people to walk within weeks /months. I can see that potential in psych. (I don't mean to put down any others, all I'm saying is that the differences made in those specialities appeal to me and I could maybe see that potential is psych in the future).

Here are my questions:

1. I can't find national data that shows psych residency US applicants have doubled in the past year relative to the previous year. Any links?

2. To those more experienced, do you see a future in which a psychiatrist will be able to make a dramatic difference in a person's life and do you think the social atmosphere and public priority will shift to make it easier for psychiatrists to do this?

Thanks so much!
