I will probably get skewered for this, but a lot of the VA's problems stems from their hiring practices where the best candidate is not selected and the veteran gets hired. I've seen well qualified people be replaced by those who have no work ethic and no intelligence, but happened to wear the uniform at one time so they got the job without any competition. They come to work and treat working in the VA like it's their coffee hour with a paycheck. Some of the worst employees I've seen in the VA are veterans which blows my mind! I just help but think how they would feel if they came into the VA and were treated the way they treat their fellow veterans!
One can usually tell those of us who were trained and worked in the private sector before we came to the VA. We usually work circles around others and constantly ask why we have to have so many slow processes to do anything! Never have I worked in a medical facility where I cannot operate under my complete scope of practice because the head of our department does not want it that way. As others have said middle management can make or break a department. I've seen good people forced out because of office politics and I've seen horrible employees not get the boot because they don't want to be responsible for firing a veteran.
That being said I've seen some amazing veterans who go above and beyond for their fellow veterans and are wonderful employees. In my experience though they unfortunately are not the norm.....
Anything that could be used though to make milmed step up its game after reading this forums would be an improvement to the current system!
I wouldn't trust the VA and their paying for anything. I know several folks who were promised things such as loan repayment and then when they started working magically there were no funds for what they were promised.....
