Significantly improved MCAT, How many MD/DO to apply to??

lundi 9 novembre 2015

Hi guys I am a 2015 new graduate from Brandeis currently working as a med receptionist/ assistant in an ophthalmologist office! (Love my Job!) Initially I was supposed to apply this cycle but messed up on the old MCAT (29) so I am planning on applying summer of 2016! I have retaken my MCAT (New version) and significantly improved. So now im wondering what my chances r w MD and if i should still apply to DO as safeties, and how many?

Here are my stats, they are far from what many of you have, but I just want a public opinion from SDN.

So here we go:
California Resident, Asian
Undergrad : Brandeis University, B.A. in Biology Minor in Sculpture

MCAT (Jan 2015): 29 (BS 9 VR 9 PS 11) NEW (2nd attempt) 517 (96%percentile) (P/C 131 B/B 130 CARS 128 P/P 128)

Current Overall GPA ( AMCAS) : 3.67
Science GPA (Final AMCAS): 3.46

The discrepancy is due to my unsuccessful freshman year, I was ill-advised and took Orgo (Honors) with Muti-variable calc, ended up with C+ in both sem of Honors Orgo and a C+ in Multi variable (3 C+s total).
Other than that I have had mainly A/A-s and occasionally B+s for the next 3 years. My Gpa started from a 2.9 in freshman year and had been in steep uprising trend till now. Its reli just dragged down by the three C+s. :(

Certification/awards:

Shadowing:
General Surgeon/ Harvard Med professor for a few weeks (rec letter writer #2)
Current job as a Medical Assistant/ Receptionist: My boss is an ophthalmologist and just started his own clinic, im his only employee so i m doing a lot more than what the job entails. Also looking forward to a great rec since i work reli closely with him.

I have 3 other letters from prof. who taught me, 2 sciences 1 art.
Personal Background:
I m a PR here not a citizen. I was brought up partially in Asia, Europe and U.S. been schooled in china, sweden and here. I think that reli helps in terms of cultural competency, skill set to adapt quickly to new environment/ standard and interpersonal communication skills esp w ppl of diff backgrounds. And since im not a pure Asian american (not born here) or a pure foreigner (not international, domestic student) , im hoping that ll give me a lil bit of an edge among the other asians who fall into one or the other.

Aside from my job im Currently working on art projects that raise awareness for medical causes. Looking to get my own website set up w my work and all and hoping to have it be a platform for people to donate to medical research in relating fields. :) Dont know how far i can get but im gonna try.

SO... Please feel free to chip in.

Genuine advice plz!! This is reli important to me as i know u all would understand. Thanks!:)
