How to make myself a stronger canidate for the next cycle?

lundi 9 novembre 2015

19 y.o. URM, residing in GA. Aspiring anesthesiologist or neonatologist (but I definitely have an open mind)

Education:
Neuroscience major, have an overall 3.73 GPA , 3.54 science/math, 1 withdraw (in psych online because I worked in a proctoring lab and was removed from the schedule because students from my class had issues using their home computers for exams. It left me with no way to pay my bills. I retook in summer got an A+)

Science/Math Grade Breakdown:
Precalc A, Physics I A, Physics 2 B+, Calc I C+, Intro to Psych A+, Bio I A, Bio II B+, Chem I A-, Chem 2 B+, Principles of Neuro A, Orgo I B

Academic Achievements
: Honors college, Nu Rho Psi, Golden Key Honour Society, named top 15% of my class, been on the dean's list since freshman year

Extracurriculars
:
Neuroscience Society, Great Minds Society, National Council of Negro Women, Minority Pre-health Association, Board member on Library Council, and African Student Association, Scholarship Ambassador

Expect to have 1400 volunteer hours by June from Children's Health Care, Emory, Grady, and Atlanta Medical Center, also expect to shadow 5 doctors by then (about 40 hours).

Work
:
Have juggled several jobs (up to three) while still full-time student,
unrelated internship at AT&T, student assistant fixing computers, cashier twice, and pet care associate.
currently working as a Teaching Assistant for Chemistry (guaranteed letter of rec)

MCAT:

I have not taken the MCAT yet and will after I take Biochem in the summer. On my practice exams I got the eq of a 27/29/31.

Family & Connections
:
Family was very low income up until this year of college, hence me working 3 jobs. Did dual enrollment senior year to spare any financial burden on them. Don't know if I can even get the FAP for AAMCS if I don't my 'want -to-apply-to' list will be cut in half.
Older sibling will be graduating from Meharry next year. Dean of Neuroscience at one of my choice medical schools literally loves me and expects a lot of me (insane amount of pressure though).

Problems
:
1. the withdraw from psych 2. no leadership positions besides being a board member on the library council, 3. either I take 18 hours next semester and have 90 to apply in june or take 13 hours next semester and submit my application mid-august after I take biochem and my MCAT. 4. not really sure who to go to for my letters of rec

Top Schools
:
Drexel, Howard, Meharry, Morehouse
also applying to Charles Drew, Loma Linda, Arizona, UAZ, Georgetown, GW, Herbert Wertheim, University of Central Florida, USF , Emory (A LONG SHOT, but why not I'm in state anyway), Louisiana State, Mercer, New York Medical College, Temple, and VCU.

What I'm asking you guys:
What can I do to make myself a stronger candidate?

I have seven months before starting apps and want to be the best candidate I can be! All tips/criticisms/ pointers/ advice is welcomed!
