Do Osteopathic doctors (really) have the same opportunities as Allopathic doctors?

dimanche 8 novembre 2015

In 2015, 17 of the 221 acgme surgical critical care fellowship spots went to DOs.

Overall, DOs have less opportunities than USMDs. It is considerably harder for DOs to match "top" programs for residency or enter highly competitive surgical specialities like urology or ENT.

After residency/fellowship, DOs and MDs are pretty much on equal footing assuming their training in comparable. I'm sure DOs face some discrimination when looking for jobs, but it is far less noticeable when compared to the matching process.

Being a DO is fine. You will have a lot of options if you do average or above the usmle. You may not have as many options as a USMD, but you won't be forced into primary care either. However, I caution borderline MD applicants applying to DO schools. I think it's worth taking an extra year or two (doing a SMP or retaking the mcat) to improve your MD application than to hastefully attend an osteopathic medical school.
