The Super Premed v. Academic Premed

mardi 17 novembre 2015

Hi All,

I wanted to spur an interesting topic. Too many premeds focus on being good at everything before applying to medical school. While this may be a good idea, I simply view it as a path to medical school and you don't have to be a super premed to get into great schools. By super premed I mean those who have a 3.7-3.9 GPA, years of research, hundreds of hours of clinical or non-clinical volunteering, and possibly a couple leadership roles.

One of my friends matriculated to a top 5 medical school in the nation by doing no more than months worth of clinical volunteering, research, shadowing, and one leadership role for a while but despite not doing as much extracurricular wise, he had a high GPA and MCAT score to make him a competitive applicant to one of the best medical schools in the nation.

If one is able to handle multiple commitments and maintain a high academic GPA more power to them, but honestly I find myself surrounded by people who want to figure out what they should do to boost their app instead of boosting their GPAs.

With that said, what are you doing as a well-balanced premed and what are your reasons for doing so? Discuss.
