Medical School & DO Enrollment on the Rise

AAMC has released data on student application volume and enrollment for 2015. Here are some highlights:

• Med school enrollment has increased 25% in the last 13 years, reaching an all-time high of 20,630 students.

• There were 38,460 first-time applicants this year, an increase of 4.8% over last time.

• Total application volume increased to 52,550 this year, up 6.2% since last year.

• Diversity was on the rise this year: African American enrollment jumped 11.6% to 1,576 and Hispanic/Latino enrollment went up 6.9% to 1,988. African American applicants increased by 16.8% to 4,661, and Hispanic/Latino applicants increased by 10.3% to 4,839.

• American Indian and Alaska Natives also saw a jump in applications (up 2.9% to 462) but experienced in drop in enrollment (down 3.5% to 195).

• Males accounted for 52% of enrollees in 2015; females for 48%.

• There was a 3.5% increase in first-time male applicants (19,725) compared to a 6.2% increase in female first-time applicants (18,724).

How does this compare to DO application and enrollment numbers? AACOM also released their report on 2015 enrollment this week. Here are some highlights;

First-year student enrollment at U.S. colleges of osteopathic medicine (COM) increased 3.5% since fall 2014.

• This year, a total of 7,025 DO students began their studies at one of 31 accredited COMs in the U.S.

• First-year matriculation in fall 2015 increased 6.3% since last year, to a total of 26,121 students.

• Two new institutions joined the COM scene this year (contributing to the increase in enrollment) – the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic medicine and the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine-Auburn.

• There were 20,670 paid applicants to one or more COMs this year, up 13.7% from last year's 18,177 applicants.

• There was a 6.3% increase in the number of graduating DO students this past summer (5,314) over last summer (4,997).
