This year's prompt:

Imagine that you are a family physician and are seeing a 15 year old girl for menstrual cramps. Her mother has accompanied her for this visit. When you examine the patient without her mother present, she tells you that she is sexually active. She begs you not to tell her mother because of her family’s strong values against teen sex. Discuss your next steps.

Interviewer: I have a nephew that goes to MIT. He's one of the really smart kids. One of those whiz kids.

Me: Yep, I've met quite a few of them.

Interviewer: Maybe you're one of them (piercing stare).

Me: I don't know about that. (small laugh)

Interviewer: Well you certainly did very well there.

Me: (now totally confused, my undergrad gpa was 3.1) Well, they let me graduate! (haha)

Interviewer: (weird look)

<On to discussion on other topics>

Interviewer: So, did you apply to many schools?

Me: Yes, I applied to 28.

Interviewer: Wow! Why so many???

Me: Well, my undergraduate GPA is below the average at most schools.

Interviewer: What? I thought you had a 3.8 at MIT!

Me: Um, no, actually that was in my post-bac coursework. (He had only glanced at the first page of AMCAS for maybe a minute.)

Interviewer: Oh. (long pause) Well. Why were your grades low at MIT?

Me: Well, a few reasons. First, MIT is a really intense place. There is an overwhelming amount of work to do all the time and my peers were really smart.

Interviewer: (weird look)

Me: I guess that sounds a lot like med school, huh? On to reasons two and three...

Anyway, I guess I dug myself out of the hole. I got accepted a week later.

Yes, I had it on Tuesday. It went really well, I think. I believe the interview itself was roughly around 30 minutes. They really conduct it in such a conversational manner that I felt like we were just talking and getting to know each other. You are assigned two interviewers and called back individually. When I first walked in, I was nervous of course. But within five minutes, I felt right at home. It's not like an interrogation at all. They don't ask you any impossible questions. I feel they really are just trying to get to know each student. Just relax and tell them about yourself. You'll do fine!

Ohh ok that's where I put mine too, I thought you were saying there was a specific area to put shadow experience other than that.

I just talked about how the doctor was, when I started shadowing, some things he showed me, what he told me about the profession, etc.

Like I said, take it as you will.

The best place to work was the Animal Clinic and Hospital in Moscow, ID. Two of the doctors in their staff pic were techs with me. They offered lots of internships for vet students and new grads. One of the docs there was in charge of the shelter's feral clinics. Some of the doctors that were there moved to clinics closer to Pullman so I know doctors at a few of the clinics up there.

The bars filled up with CSU and UI professors on the Moscow side, so if you want to meet some outside of class...

Again, I'm a couple years gone, so while I get regular updates to the drama, some things slip by without mention ;)

MPH Fall 2016: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

Hi, everyone!

To my surprise, nobody has created an MPH Fall 2016 thread yet! I joined this site just to start one because I think they were valuable resources to applicants in previous years. So, let the fun, anxiety & night terrors begin! Best of luck to you all, entering class of 2016!!!!

I'm copying stuff over from previous years because I lack originality (and why invent the wheel twice?)
And let's try keep this strictly about the application process for simplification. If information changes, please come back to the thread and keep us updated.

Me first, yay!

Undergrad School: Private liberal arts in California
Undergrad GPA/Major GPA: 3.55/3.86 (butchered my first year grades, came back strong)
Major/Minor: Neuroscience and Psychology double major/Philosophy minor
GradGPA: n/a
Grad Studies: n/a
GRE: Taken in 2014 with minimal studying, so I'm scheduled to take it again in a couple of months with adequate preparation. Either way, my scores from last year are 160V/157Q/4.5W. (Yes, I realize that these are moderately good scores. I just want to challenge myself and feel like I did my best.)
Experience/Research:

  • 2.5 years as psychology research lab manager
  • 1 year as president of academic psychology club president
  • 1 independent summer research project on stress hormones funded by research grant
  • multiple volunteer experiences in mental health settings (special ed. classroom, autism behavioral training, at-risk youth mentoring)
  • multiple poster publications and a 1st place research presentation prize for work on stress hormones at regional conference
  • Misc. - member of a few honor societies in psychology and science, studied abroad with Semester at Sea, and received highest achievement award for a graduating senior in my academic department
No work experience or journal publications or extensive international experience :(

Interested in: If you can't tell by now, I really like studying mental health. My interest in public health is very specific in global mental health. (Please wish me luck that I'll somehow find a job in the future in this nearly nonexistent, poorly funded field.) So, the schools I'm applying to specialize in this field, and some of them aren't even MPH programs. Oh well, let's just go with it!

Thank goodness this b**** is out of our lives, so I'm not as fuming as usual about her, but since there's a thread, here goes...

I work in a tiny lab with 2 faculty researchers, 2 technicians, 1 post-doc, and 1 MD fellow (plus the PI who never sets foot in the lab). The post-doc is probably the biggest nightmare this lab will NEVER forget. Because:

She is a mega dumbf*ck b****. She screams at her boss when she hears what she doesn't want to hear. This shouting match goes on for at least 30 min sometimes in the middle of our lab, making it very uncomfortable for everyone else. So the rest of us have to swiftly make an exit to another room and chill there until they're done. Once the boss leaves and we go back into the room, she corners all of us and starts bawling "I only got a PhD because I hate being bossed around, and I thought if I got a PhD, no one would be able to boss me around!"

She tells the new technician (on her first week) who had a slight cough that she should have taken the day off. The technician says that she's not that sick, and besides she hasn't accrued earned time yet. Then she goes "well, my dad in NY has cancer, and if i catch anything from you and i go visit him in the next few weeks, he's going to die!"

She also told the new technician, "no offense, but YOU should not be wearing a size small or extra-small" hmmmm....

I was talking about how I personally have no idea what my mom saw in my dad when they first started dating because based on what she told me, my dad was a terrible date. Then this b**** tells me that I don't know enough about them to make that kind of judgment. to which I was thinking "well duh... they're still happily married after 4 kids and 30 yrs of marriage, obviously something worked" But then, just after SHE told ME that I didn't know enough about my own parents to judge their relationship, she goes "I hope you don't get married to your boyfriend, because he sounds like a LOSER"

Her favorite topics are politically charged topics that have no place in the work environment (e.g. abortion), and she chastises everyone who doesn't agree with her.

Her other favorite topic is about how she hates douchebag PhDs who are stuck up about the letters they have after their name, and how she's not like that at all. However, she is the first person to bring up in any conversation she can that she should be treated differently because of her credentials. She tells our pathologist (who was doing her a favor by reading her brain slides) that perhaps she should "help" her since as an MD she doesn't have the expertise that a PhD might... Talk about insulting! Also, we have issues with environmental services bringing us biohazard bins when we need extras. Someone will call and just say "hi, can we have 10 bins delivered to room ____" and they'll say "Sure!" but for some reason it doesn't happen. B**** will then be like "maybe I should call, 'cause I think they might listen if someone with a degree called." Um... what the hell was she planning on saying to indicate that she had a degree???

She was also the dumbf*** who thought that not eating sugar was going to prevent her from getting fat. So she refused to eat anything with sugar (as in added granulated sugar). But instead she would eat a whole bag of dried mangoes in one sitting (like a whopping 1000 calories in that bag), or a whole can of macadamia nuts. But apparently she liked to bake ****. So she comes in with this tupperware filled with pieces of this nasty looking chocolate cake. She tried baking one for her friend and f*cked up so the cake ended up flat instead of fluffy. She explains this to us and goes "so I dunno how good it is because i didn't taste it, because you know, I don't eat sugar. But I thought you guys would enjoy it so go ahead and dig in." Throughout the day, we all kind of opened up the tupperware to take a look... but the thing had dog hair (she has this nasty chow that's bitten two children) all over it, sticking out of the sponge... so we all just left it there. At the end of the day, b**** was infuriated that no one ate it and goes "Fine, I'll take it to the dog park people, cause I'm sure they'll appreciate it. I guess this means I'll never be bringing anything for you people!"

She was so incompetent at her job that everyone in the lab had to come in on our thanksgiving weekend (plus many others) to dissect out embryo brains. After we finished the dissection, my boss and I disappeared to the animal facility to check on the mouse colony, and when we came back, the b**** had left with 4 people's worth of dissection set ups left out(bloody surgical instruments and all) as well as a bunch of other things for ME to clean! We even have an explicit policy in the lab that technicians are NOT there to do chores for post-docs. My boss was FURIOUS! He ended up cleaning with me and was like "why is it that we get called in on our Thanksgiving weekend because she doesn't know how to plan well, and we end up with the cleaning?"

Ugh... there are so many more of these infuriating stories, but I'ma gonna stop now. Only thing is that if it was just an abrasive personality, I could deal with it, but this chick was soooo incompetent... It was difficult when she sucked and couldn't do a thing right, and I was told to fix something for her by my boss, but I had to tip toe ever so lightly as not to offend her mighty degree.

She has a PhD in molecular biology... but she can't do a single thing! like literally. She had 1 paper published in all of her 7 years grad school + 3 yrs post-doc. And that last paper only got published because her experiments had to be done in duplicate by other people in the lab. She can't do DNA or RNA extractions (and she doesn't even notice when her OD readings are way off). She can't do PCR (in the past she's used 2 forward primers, didn't heat the lid, only ran it for one cycle, her stock primer was growing bacteria). She can't clone (she doesn't know how to pick the right enzymes, she tries to ligate things that don't have compatible ends, doesn't know how much insert/vector to use, she tried to ligate insert/vectors that both lacked phosphates, etc...). EVERYTIME something goes wrong though, she'd ask me to order super expensive reagents because she thought the stuff we were using wasn't good enough for her experiments . She also doesn't understand scientific notation, and we realized 2 years in that all of her calculations were off by a factor of 10. And everytime I'm talking to someone on troubleshooting an experiment I'm working on, and we're going through logical breakdowns of where something went wrong, she has to bust in and start suggesting the stupidest ****. and EVERYTIME, I have to find a way to politely decline her suggestion because any organism with a brain could tell that it would not help. But she would be offended anyway.

ugh. oh well. she's gone now. and as my boss says "she's someone else's problem now" but it does feel good to get it off my chest :)

4 year vs 6 year OMS...

Having an MD levels the playing field.
But in either case, as an OMS trying to do extended scope you are usually going to feel like you have a ****ing fetus on the side of your head when you do those first cases. But when you stick to what you have done, and know (based on residency/fellowship training) you will be fine.

I think its easier to do expanded scope with an MD because there are many retards out there, who have no clue of what we do. Administrators, old school MDs, RNs who don't know, are definitely more likely to assume that a "medical doctor" is more competent to do a trach , flap , etc. ie. a general surgeon who wants to cut out a jaw.. most ppl would say... " is he really going that? meh..oh well " versus an oral surgeon dds who wants to raise a flap most ppl would say " IS HE REALLY GOING TO DO THAT??? oh **** thats ****t up! stop him he's going to kill everyone". These assumptions are ingrained in us because most people like to keep it simple in their minds of who can do what.

It's like how some people think podiatrist only clean feet, some of them can do alot more, etc.
We are in that same boat at times, we are the ****ing foot doctor of the head and neck. You throw on an MD, and then you have less people to impress or who are quick to judge.

There will always be people who recognize skill and talent irregardless of the degree you have. HOWEVER, for the haters, and uninitiated , these are the people who will screen for competence/legitimacy by just checking if someone has an MD.

ANother good example... going to a restaurant that requires a dress code: you wear the jacket, and regardless of what you are wearing underneath you get in, and do your thing.. If you want to wear a wife beater with a big tooth on it, then you will surely get stopped, and then you have to go through so many more dumbass hoops to prove yourself.. If you're down to prove that 900 times a day, then be my guest.

anyway.. just wanted to say my piece.

DO NOT COME TO SOUTH AUSTRALIA (FLINDERS MED) for medicine

0 commentaires
Hello everyone,

I can strongly say that the situation has really turned around from being safe -> optimistic -> doubtful -> no hope at all.

Until last year, 19/20 flinders internationals obtained an internship and 1 left to singapore.
This year, most SA internationals will not get an internship in SA. Nobody got any interstate offers yet and will unlikely get one.

SA is having major financial difficulties and is likely not gonna turn around either. They have cut down internship spots from 276 positions to 247 this year. They are planning to cut further 50 spots in 2017. Medical student enrollment is slowly increasing every year. However they are still guaranteeing domestic students internships while internationals do not even have a chance to compete with them at all. This means that even if you are the top achiever in your class, you will NOT EVER get an internship in SA.
Some may think that connections might work but it really doesnt work that way when it comes to obtaining a public hospital internship in Australia, well at least in SA.

Another sad thing is even if you were to get an internship somehow through CMI, there is now an oversupply of doctors in Australia and the worst in SA.

Anecdotally, some people are not even obtaining RMO jobs either as well which means you are at a dead end of your medical career. This will likely to be an increasing trend from now on.

This is the first year that most internationals will not obtain a public hospital intern spot in SA and will bound to get worse in the future. When I was applying to med school, I though Flinders gave the best chance for internship but now it seems like med schools in Victoria would be a better choice as they select interns on a merit-based system.

Going back to Canada is not a good option either as it is harder than it seems to actually go back realistically. It is a lot of investment in your life and hope everybody makes an informed decision about coming to Australia for medicine from now on.

If you were my brother/sister, I would NOT recommend coming here anymore. However, if you still want to come, you should better gear your study towards USMLE from day 1 of medical school and apply to the US which is not easy either.

Sorry for venting, but I had to. If you have any questions, fire away and I will be happy to answer.

Class of 2020 - HPSP Scholarship Applicants (Navy/Army/Air Force)

I met with my Army recruiter on Monday (8/31) and he said the first board is going to be Jan 1 with all paperwork and whatnot due in mid to late November. That's for non-early-acceptance. For early acceptance to their HPSP program (meaning, you can get a provisional offer of the scholarship WITHOUT yet having an acceptance to dental school) they require a 19+ DAT with 3.6 or higher GPA. If you don't have that, you can't go up for board review before Jan 1.

As far as the Navy goes, yes, the 22 DAT is required for early acceptance - if you don't have that, you can't go to board until December or January. Deadline for December board is Dec 1, so assuming you get an acceptance on Dec 1, you'd have to send that to your Navy recruiter that same day to be able to be considered for the December board. Even then, you'll have missed out on scholarships that have already been provisionally offered to those who applied to the early acceptance (with 22+ DAT) in the October and November boards. Out of ~65-75 scholarships, I would imagine about 15-20 will have already been provisionally given out by the time the December board rolls around.

Historically, UTMB is very generous with its interview invites, more than any other Texas school in my opinion. All that you need to guarantee an interview
is a 3.7+ GPA and an "above average" mcat score, thus getting an interview here doesn't correlate well with your chances at other Texas schools, especially those with secondaries. Also, UTMB's class fills up mostly thru pre-match offers, which I also think are influenced heavily by your LizzyM and your interview day.

If anyone has any input on my observations, please feel free to contribute.

Hi everyone,

I will be applying this cycle as well, good luck to everyone.

Non-traditional student here, IS, cGPA 3.52, sGPA 3.41, 7/8/11 :dead:, 1000+ hours of patient care, have volunteered at UNMC-SHARING clinic since 2009, did research while in undergrad (a few yrs ago). I am aware that my stats are not too impressive but I guess i have a little hope.

I work at a community clinic and i have met several UNMC med students, they do their ICE there. Two of them told me that UNMC COM had rejected them but also offered them a special 1 yr program and as long as they maintained a 3.5 GPA, they were guaranteed a seat. I have never heard of such program but i am guessing UNMC does not want to make this info public. All I know is that it exist since i met those students last year and they were M1s.

I am hoping to submit my application by mid August! good luck everyone!

Why do you think BCOM is the perfect place for you and what qualities do you feel you would bring to BCOM that would help develop and foster the climate of our school?

What was your worst grade in college and explain what, if anything, you did to address the issue.

Answer one (1) of the following questions:
Discuss ethical behavior in a strictly secular context.
Defend the position that physicians should administer lethal injection in states where the death penalty is still applied.

I was an applicant for the 2013-2014 cycle and although I did not attend this school, out of all the schools I interviewed at, this one was my favorite (it was also my very first interview, I was one of the first groups). The dean, faculty, campus, and even community were extremely welcoming. From the moment you walk into the school, you feel how they dedicated and driven everyone is. I ended up choosing another DO school that is close to home but wanted to share this with you guys. Be yourselves in all your interviews, it will take you far and don't get addicted to SDN!!

FYI, there are also two other (optional) questions found on the "other info" section:

If you are currently not a full time student, please briefly describe the activities you are participating in this academic year, if it is not listed on your AMCAS application.

If there is an important aspect of your personal background or identity, not addressed elsewhere in the application, that you would like to share with the Committee, we invite you to do so here. Many applicants will not need to answer this question. Examples might include significant challenges in access to education, unusual socioeconomic factors, and identification with a culture, religion, race, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation or gender identity. Briefly explain how such factors have influenced your motivation for a career in medicine.

I can't find the exact site I was looking at before (at least not quickly), but there is this from the M4 curriculum site:

"Students complete at least one of each category (medicine, pediatrics and surgery) in addition to general electives. These can be completed at Mayo Clinic campuses in Rochester, Minn., Arizona or Florida, as well as national and international locations. Many students complete an international or underserved population elective in the spring of the fourth year."

The original thing i was looking at had exact sites listed

I was so excited about the getting the secondary, until I read the essay question.

1. 250 words is not enough
2. I do not have any good stories about influencing someone else that I can related to wanting to become a doctor
3. How the f&&& do personal characteristics demonstrate an interest in medicine?

I feel like it's going to take forever to write this essay and that even after submitting, I'm going to keep obsessing over this essay.

Mailed out 8/13, got supplemental today.

I know there are people from UCLA here or other quarter systems so can you please help me out?

I took the chem 14 series and when i fill out the prereq worksheet, under gen chem i put 14A, 14B, and 14BL which only adds up to 11 units and it says we need 12. For org chem I have 14C, 14 CL and 14D which also adds up to 11 units but we only need 8 there. Is this okay? I'm assuming so since they get tons of UCLA applicants every year and it isn't like we have different curriculum, plus our labs overlap for gen and org so....just looking for reassurance I guess lol

I left a voicemail with them yesterday at the time of the conference and sent an email. Since it was 6:30 nobody was there. Today, nobody was answering their admissions line at 5:30 pm. I got a reply by email at 3:30 (which I didn't see until after I called) apologizing for the technical difficulties and suggested I try again next month.

When I called ACOTE, the first person who answered the phone was the one who told me it was very unusual not to get approved. When I asked about Salus in particular, that's when she wanted to refer me to her boss to get the full story on the accreditation process.

I got the impression that the issues were fixable but were significant enough that they would have preferred that Salus postpone the final review a little bit. If none of them got fixed, they could potentially impact final accreditation. However, that's why they have all the interim reviews, is to find issues to fix before the final review.

The last person I talked to suggested that I attend one of Salus's webinars later on and ask them about how they are progressing with accreditation. That's why I was a little worried when it didn't look like the webinar was happening.

I promise I'm not just making this up so that people who are already accepted won't drop out, making room for people who applied later (like me) to get in.

The school I was attending last fall put a hold on my transcript because I didn't have immunization records (a bit hard to find 35 years later). Their online immunization form said that because of the nationwide shortage of TB tests, only high risk individuals (like people who've been shadowing OTs in hospitals/nursing homes and have chronic health conditions themselves) need to do skin TB tests or get chest X-rays. By the time I got that cleared up, it was almost finals week and I waited for my grades to get posted before doing anything in OTCAS. So I didn't apply anywhere until January.

Incoming MS1 here, so I can't speak on very much aside from my interview and second look experiences – which were awesome. I'm sure the MS2+s will be much better sources. Just want to say that I am pumped to matriculate here and cannot wait to meet (and possibly host!) some of you guys for interviews!

Stats [source]
~6,500 applicants
~4,500 secondaries completed (though no screen)
~600 interviewed (MD) + ~60 interviewed (MSTP)
As per interview day, about 200 are accepted, 200 waitlisted, and 200 rejected.
~250 total acceptances
118 matriculated (10-12 MSTP students)

As per interview day, there is no in-state bias.

2014-2015 Secondary Application (there is no screen)

  1. If you have already received your bachelor's degree, please describe what you have been doing since graduation, and your plans for the upcoming year. (700 characters)
  2. If you interrupted your college education for a semester or longer, please describe what you did during that time. (700 characters)
  3. List any academic honors or awards you have received since entering college: (600 characters)
  4. Briefly describe your single, most rewarding experience. Feel free to refer to an experience previously described in your AMCAS application. (900 characters)
  5. Are there any areas of medicine that are of particular interest to you? If so, please comment. (1100 characters)
  6. Briefly describe a situation where you had to overcome adversity; include lessons learned and how you think it will affect your career as a future physician. (900 characters)
  7. Briefly describe a situation where you were not in the majority. What did you learn from this experience? (1100 characters)
  8. If applying to the dual MD/MBA program, please describe your reasons for wishing to obtain this degree. (1100 characters)
*Note: in the 2014-15 application cycle it often took over a month for a submitted secondary to be marked as complete.
*Note: you can discuss experiences already selected as "most meaningful" or discuss entirely different ones; applicants from either approach received interviews and acceptances so do not fret. Yes, the secondary questions are somewhat redundant, but trust me... JHU is worth it. ;)

2014-2015 Important Dates
First secondary: July 2nd, 2014
First interview: August 13th, 2014
First acceptance: December 12th, 2014 via portal update (with email alert)
First waitlist: December 12th, 2014 via portal update (with email alert)
First pre-interview rejection: December 16th, 2014
First acceptance off waitlist: April 19th, 2015

JHU is semi-rolling, so post-interview decisions were relayed solely on Dec 16th, Jan 30th, and March 30th. As per JHU’s Facebook page, waitlist movement should occur by mid-May.

Update Letter Policy
Updates are not accepted pre-interview. Post-interview updates may be sent to Ms. Valerie Mazza at: vmazz[email protected]

Curriculum
Genes to Society 1.5 year condensed preclinical. Preclinical has been P/F since 2009.

  • Pass is set to 70%
  • Clinicals are graded honours/high pass/pass/fail
  • Lectures are non-mandatory and recorded; labs and small group activities have 80% required attendance
Interview
One faculty interview, one student interview. Faculty interview is open-file.

Of Note

  • As of 2014-2015, JHU offers a $20,500 unit loan and need based aid only. As per interview day, the average graduate debt for the class of 2013 was $108,000 (not including undergrad debt).
  • Johns Hopkins Admissions has an informative and frequently-updated Facebook page. Check it out.
  • There does not appear to be an internal ranking in the preclinical years. According to this evaluation of MSPEs, the Johns Hopkins’s Dean’s Letter provides: “Incomplete data. The summary paragraph sometimes concludes with a Most Confident and Enthusiastic recommendation, or with a Confident and Enthusiastic recommendation. But there are no appendices that define a student's performance relative to his or her peers.”

Hi all, FYI- I received the secondary today after it had to be sent from someone in the admissions office's personal school email address (never went through when sent from the adcom address), apparently all the applicants with Vanderbilt email addresses did not receive it because of some IT problem but enough of them had called that they grabbed our names and sent us an email. Hey guys I was wondering if you could give me any advice on how to improve my application for this cycle. I am a non traditional student and had to take a few pre-reqs to be considered last year. I applied last year and got interviewed and waitlisted at tennessee and also waitlisted at UF.

25 years old, male, Florida resident

Degrees:
B.S. in Biology, University of South Florida

Cum GPA: 3.69
Science GPA:3.5
(I took microbiology in the fall and biochemistry this spring, received A's.

Veterinary Experience:
- 717 hours experience SA
- 1183 hours experience LA

I work at a mixed animal practice and am classified as a large animal technician but obviously do small animal when we are not out in the field.

Animal Experience:
- 1570 hours volunteering at a theraputic riding facility for disabled children and the elderly.

Letters of Recommendation
-University of South Florida Professor
-Jacksonville University professor
-Veternarian I work for
-Owner of the riding facility

GRE: 1110: 540 verbal; 570 quant. I am currently enrolled in a kaplan course and will be retaking it just before the deadline this summer.

My concerns:

-Basically all of the vet experience is from one clinic. I shadowed at a few clinics but only accumulated maybe 100 hours from them before working at this clinic. I have tried to find other vets but I really enjoy working here because we see all species. I have looked for strictly LA vets but my mixed animal vet pretty much has a monopoly on the region.

-All of my animal experience if from this riding facility. I love working there, it is really rewarding and it combines animal experience with community service/extracurriculars.

-I have no other extracurriculars other than the community related service I perform at the riding facility. I basically spend all my time between the clinic and at the riding facility.

I think I have strengthened my application since last year, I had about 900 hours vet experience and applied with no animal experience whatsoever. I am hoping to have significantly more hours once I apply again in october.

I am applying this year to: UF, Tenn, Tufts, UPENN, Cornell and definetly a few other schools. My obvious number one is my IS (UF) but I really like Tufts and it is my top OOS school.

Im sure I have left some things out so please ask me anything.

Thank you so much!

Just thought I'd pass along this information to anyone interested...

Called LECOM-B today to see if they had received my application from AACOMAS because for some reason one of the schools I applied to (looking at you Nova) didn't have me in their system yet even though AACOMAS said they had sent my verified application. Still waiting on a call back from the supervisor regarding the status (or lack thereof) of my application and decided to make some calls to other schools I applied to to see if I had been processed. Anyways, called LECOM-B today who said I was in fact in the system and that they were planning on sending out secondaries today and/or tomorrow. So yeah, be on the lookout for those.

TL;DR - LECOM-B admissions said they are sending out secondaries today and/or tomorrow.

Hey everyone i am making my final decision as to what i want to pursue as my career. I have a few questions regarding admissions to LMU-DCOM. some may or may not be pointless. I checked out the pre requisites for the school and was wondering if those who applied to the DO program completed? Basically what I am asking is the list of requirements as far as classes, if a BS in Biology is needed for entrance, etc. I do know the MCAT and letters of recommendation and experience in medical volunteer is HIGHLY recommended. I am just curious on what other classes I would have to take to be eligible for admission. I have completed bio 1+2, English, psychology courses, and currently taking organic chem courses this summer. I saw that inorganic chem is required but im assuming I would have to go to another school to take them since they do not have them here in my current school. I have a 3.3 GPA, and plan on joining several medical related ECs this following year. I am also taking extra science courses to boost my GPA. ANY KIND OF FEEDBACK AND RECOMMENDATION(S) WILL BE GREAT. THANKS

what are your ECs and GPA?

I see other applicants with that DAT score getting 4-5 interviews. So that DAT is definitely enough to get interviews.

however, it sounds like you will apply next year and have almost a whole year ahead of you, I think you should invest in crack DAT, qvault, destroyer, and bootcamp if you can get the score to 21+, life will be easier for you come admission time.

during the admission cycle, your confidence will spiral downward and I think having a solid stats can offer you some assurance while you wait for interviews to come.

Program Name - University of Rochester

1. Ease Of Communication: Very easy e-mail communication with coordinator, who was very nice. Everything very clearly laid out for us.

2. Accommodation & Food: Put you up for night prior to interview in a hotel by the airport, with shuttle service to and from the medical center on interview day. Resident dinner on the night before at a nice place. Lots of residents were at the dinner: two chiefs, two child fellows, one each from the other years. A very relaxed, friendly atmosphere. Lunch was standard deli sandwich catering. Again, many residents were at lunch and were happy to chat, answer questions, share experiences, etc.

3. Interview Day (Schedule, Type Of Interview, Unusual Questions, Experiences): Day begins at 7:45. Starts with an overview of the department from the Chair: very relaxed, informal. Gives info on the history of the department (“birthplace of biopsychosocial model”) and on their current values (the big one: making sure people have access to community care). Followed by overview powerpoint of the program and the city in general from the PD and Associate PD and then another informal presentation from the Vice Chair and Associate Chair. Q&A encouraged throughout. Four 30 minute interviews throughout the day: one with PD, one with Associate PD, one with a chief resident, and one with a faculty in your specific area of interest. Interviews were almost all of the “Tell me what you want to know about the program”-variety; very relaxed, enjoyable, friendly. PD says he sometimes asks people to talk about a case. No one really had any questions for me apart from wanting to know what I was looking for in a program. Not a day where they want you to sell yourself, but rather one where they want to see if you’d think you’d be a good fit. Lunch with residents after the first couple of interviews, then a tour, and then the last one or two interviews.

4. Program Overview: Academic setting at a university hospital. Emphasis on clinical psychiatry in the training. Almost all of the rotations in the first 2 year are on the medical center campus (or very close by), with more electives in the surrounding community later on. Out of your 4 primary care months as a PGY-1, you do two on the Behavioral Medical Surgical Unit, which is for med/surg patients with serious psych issues. 3 of the PGY-1 inpatient months are on the forensic floor at a state hospital, which residents say is a really interesting, educational experience. Call seems very humane: 4 shifts per month for PGY-1 and 2, 3 shifts per month for PGY-3, and 2 per month for PGY-4. No overnight call. Moonlighting encouraged and easily available (at the medical center’s CPEP): their material says starting in the second half of PGY-2, but a resident said that realistically you can’t start until PGY-3. The hospital has a big catchment area and is the major provider in the region, so there’s supposed to be a good variety in the patient population and they treat the full spectrum of psych issues. Fellowships in Child/Adolescent, Geriatric, and Forensic. No Psychosomatic fellowships yet, but supposedly it’s in the works.

5. Faculty Achievements & Involvement: The faculty I met all seemed very nice. Per residents, faculty are very supportive. The PD and the Department Chair both emphasized the importance they placed on making sure trainees have enough autonomy to learn and make their own decisions, but have support whenever they need it.

6. Location & Lifestyle: Rochester seems like a pretty nice city of its size and type. Lifestyle, in general, seems like a big selling point for this program. They seem to be very family friendly, and not just paying it lip service: many faculty and residents all had specific examples of how the program worked with people to accommodate residents with family obligations, commitments, etc. Seems like a very affordable, livable place to raise a family. Even residents who weren’t excited about moving to Rochester at first say that they’ve come to really like it.

7. Salary & Benefits: Mostly standard. Along with the city, the university offers a $9K incentive if you’re a first-time homeowner buying a house in one of the neighborhoods near the university.

8. Program Strengths: Strong on community psychiatry. Emphasis on the biopsychosocial model. Very family friendly, both in terms of the culture of the program itself and the livability of the city. Great work/life balance. Good support from faculty. Residents all seem very happy to be there. No one acted like they were performers in a Potemkin village. FWIW, the Chair seemed like he would be a really great boss.

9. Potential Weaknesses: Not really a weakness, but… No one really talked about neuroscience at all during the residency dinner or on the interview day itself. No one there seemed that excited about psychopharm either (PD: “What’s the best antidepressant? The one you can get your patient to take”.) This is probably partly just a matter of emphasis, although I think it reflects, not really a weakness, but a genuine sense of what this program puts a high value on (“how can we deliver psychiatric care to the people who need it the most”) over what it places a (maybe only slightly) lower value on (“what’s the specific neurological dysfunction going on in people who need psychiatric care the most”).

10. Overall impression: Very solid program where everyone is very happy. Good camaraderie among the residents, and residents have only positive things to say about the faculty. Sets a high bar in terms of lifestyle, life/work balance.

TWU, UTMB, UTEP, and probably TTU over here--along with schools in Virginia, Michigan, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Florida. CAN YOU TELL I WANT TO GO TO OT SCHOOL?

Edit:
The list is now more like UTMB, TWU from Texas and then VCU (Virginia), UPitt, Salus (PA), ECU (NC), NOVA (FL), and then if I don't get into any of those, I'll try for UTEP and some others.

Hello all. Getting really excited to meet you all and to hear about interviews soon.

I just joined the forum and spent last hour reading thru last years class forum for OU.

I'm a non-traditional applicant: was a captain in the Army with BA and MS in fuzzy stuff like Russian Language before retiring and going back to school for medical school.
29 MCAT, 3.72 BCPM gpa*, 3.22 cumulative gpa.

*bummed though in the last 2.5 years doing pre-med classes have completed all pre-reqs and related classes with 92hrs of all 4.00, but man that 1 freaking F from Astronomy of all classes 20 years ago really knocks down that science gpa :(

I'm in-state Okie and moved back here after army and only applying to OU and OSU.

AAMCAS all verifed since June, Secondary since August, but was waiting on committee letter until 30 Sep so just officially completed 01 Oct. Anyone here hear about interviews yet? So ready to know so can plan for family better.

Again welcome to all and nice to meet you and good luck.
