I was wondering how many of you use IMRT / VMAT for early stage (T1-T2) glottic cancer?

Do you contour it the same way you would treat with 3D or lateral fields?
Or do you try to spare tissue, like the contralateral cord, if there is no involvement going at the midline.

Do you use IGRT? I'm kind of troubled with IMRT, since its a moving target every time the patient swallows.

Would you guys have taken loans if your parents were willing to pay for your schooling?

So my mother talked to me about paying for my PA education by selling one of her houses recently (i know this is premed but the PA forums are so dead =/). I never expected or wanted her to cover my graduate education cost as she already paid for my UG. However, I wanted to hear out people who has taken out loans' opinion on this situation. For me it's kind of a pride/i feel bad thing if i accept the offer. How much easier would your life be without those loans? Does it even matter?

Question about hyperventilation

If a person is hyperventilating, the blood has:

A) increased saturation of hemoglobin with O2.

B) a higher level of CO2.

C) a higher pH level.

D) an increase in carbonic acid.

Every time I look back at old notes it all says that hyperventilation causes an high pp. CO2 and thus increase in [H+] which means lower pH. I choose B, but the answer is C. C is completely contradictory to my notes so I thought I'd ask you guys to help explain why it's right! HELP

I need more sources to practice my reading comprehension. I have already tried Kaplan, OAT Achiever, and ADA sample test. But it wasn't enough because I only got a 300 on my RC the first time I took the exam and so it kept my AA down.

Doesnt it make much much more sense to have cs during residency???..we actually get trained and see lot of patients and it makes sense for us to have freaking skills to take history and physicals and get paid money to pay for exam...as students we already have enough things to do..some rotations we dont even see patients...we should all bring this up and have it administered during residency!!!

HOW??? DO I got about research. Man I apply for research jobs, I email researchers, but no luck. Man I want to research, not for the medical application, but for RESEARCH!!.

On a serious note, how does one go about finding research. My school is huge, and very close to saturated and every research opportunity that is e-mailed to me, you can bet suzy or billy already emailed the researcher back within the minute they received the email.

more shadowing hours=150 hours, less volunteering hours=maybe 50-100.

But for pre meds its
more volunteering hours=200 hours, less shadowing hours=40 hours.

There are no recent posts on this matter, so I thought I'd reopen the discussion. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

I read on an earlier post from 6 years ago that Mills College has a widely acclaimed Pre-Med Post-Bacc that sends folks to UCSF and such. I wanted to know if anyone has heard anything good or bad about St. James School of Medicine? I am considering applying, but I am unsure. I live in New Jersey, but I know that they don't have full accredation as of yet. Should I risk it and just apply? I did really bad on my MCAT and my gpa is a 3.0, so I don't know what school would accept me. Seems like this one might, but before I apply, I wanted to know anyone's opinion.

some Major concerns

She said most places in northern IL/Chicago area were offering family med doctors salaries around 100-130K due to the saturation of docs around there from all the 6 medical schools in the area/residency programs. Do family med docs get paid that little? I thought starting salaries were around 180K and then I know in less desirable rural areas, the salaries are more around 200-250K with sign-on bonuses. Have the unfortunate luck of getting cold sore breakouts whenever I get stressed - and so far there is no hope of a less stressful M2 year.

Anyone have any suggestions/remedies you find helpful? I've got prescription antivirals but never get the "tingle" sensation anymore, they just show up in full blister form without warning.

Is being in Phi Beta Kappa REALLY that impressive?

I always hear about how impressive it is when adcoms see that an applicant is a member of PBK, but I mean, isn't it all relative? I had a cumulative GPA of 3.86 as an undergraduate at an Ivy League college, and I wasn't elected to become a member of PBK. However, I know some people who go to much lower ranked schools (as in US News ranked 50+) who were able to be a member of PBK with lower GPAs than me. I'm not going to medical school for the money, and I like 90% of what Bernie Sanders stands for. However, he has historically been for a very high tax rate for the top income earners. Like most med students, I'm dropping at least 200 k for the pleasure of a medical education. How are we going to pay that back if we have a massive tax hike for the "rich"? Do these tax rates account for the fact that you have 200 k in loans accumulating at 6.8%?

I am an M1 student at a big research school and I am starting to question my decision to do an MD instead of an MD/PhD.

I structured my 4 years of undergrad life around bench research and, to a great degree, it kept me sane. The lab was a relaxing and happy place for me. Even my mentors and other researchers commented how my enjoyment of research was uncommon. At the end of my tenure, my PI half pleaded with me to do a PhD instead of an MD.

I'm currently in my first semester of my undergrad, just trying to gain some wisdom from the crowd. I don't want to miss on opportunities, not take advantage of any resources I do not know about or make common mistakes that can be avoided by someone who has been there and done that.


Also, any tips that can be given will be very much appreciated. Maybe on how to become a stronger candidate, maybe tips on certain mandatory courses I will be taking (OCHEM lol) and how you studied for them....

I am in dire need of help on what I can do at this point in time. The person that I had read over my personal statement inserted an inappropriate comment into my essay that I missed while reading over it.

After reading about many of the cons of medicine, I still want to become a physician, mainly an Orthopedic surgeon. I know I know, before, I always thought Ortho or bust if I did end up going the med school route, but know I'll be happy in any surgical field. Does it really matter where you do your post-bacc? I'm starting at CSUEB in about a month and I want to know if I'm making the right decision. Just curious if the ADCOM's look "down" or weigh that I went to a state school versus a UC.

I've opted for CSUEB mostly because of cost and convenience to where I live. Another main reason is actually because my MCAT test date is on 9/11 and UC Berkeley Extension started last week.

I've been working very hard to take my MCAT soon, but lately SDN has been scaring me. People here make it seem like a top MCAT score is more due to luck and that it cannot be guaranteed. I am shooting for a 515+ on the exam, and let's say that by the time I take it, I will have:

1. understood the concepts so well that I can teach it to others (frequent review of flashcards)
2. taken 6-10 practice tests and gone over very carefully
3. done a ton of practice passages, FSQ's (~3 hrs. a day...

So, I recently failed my comlex level 2 - plan to retake in November...here's the predicament:

I've already submitted ERAS, already completed 2 interviews, have some lined up and have 4 sub-I's planned. If I keep all the sub-I's I will be studying for my retake while I'm doing these rotations, not the end of the world since I have two months and the hours aren't too bad for FM, but still unsure...

I've always wondered this. I was just interviewed not too long ago at my top school and just happened to have this thought. I know of some schools that have 20-25 interview dates each with 20-30 students interviewing a day, and they have to end up narrowing all of them down to about 100 or so ( > 150 if it's a big medical school).
